ATTENDANCE REGULATIONS

Huntington Christian School observes all laws and regulations as set forth by the state of California and local county authorities in regards to attendance.  Excessive absences could cause a child to be retained at the current grade level.  Students who expect to be successful in school need to attend school regularly and punctually.

EXCUSED ABSENCES

A student will be considered excused from school when the absence is:

  • Due to illness. Students with a prolonged illness or condition will require a doctor’s note to be considered excused.

  • For the purpose of attending the funeral service of a member of his or her immediate family so long as the absence is not more than one day if the service is conducted in Southern California and not more than three days if the service is conducted outside southern California.

  • For the purpose of having medical/dental services rendered with a note from the Doctor or Dentist.

  • For court appearances.

  • To attend a religious retreat.

There is no penalty in class work for missed days.   The student will have as many days to make up missed work as they were absent.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES

Any absence not listed above is an unexcused absence including planned and unplanned vacations.  A student shall receive no graded credit for an activity or assignment which occurs during the period of time when the student is absent.  Even though there will be no credit for the work, the student is still responsible for the content of the material.  All tests will be made up on the day of their return and major projects will be due on their assigned date.  If the student will be absent on the day a project is due, the student must turn it in before the due date to receive full credit.

These absences will count towards a maximum of 10 days in each quarter.  Any student who misses more than 10 days in a quarter can receive a grade of no higher than 80% for the quarter.

This policy was designed to help eliminate extended, unexcused absences.  These absences put a burden on the teacher and the child.

PERSONAL DAYS

All students shall receive 3 personal days to use in place of an unexcused absence and receive regular credit for their assignments.  These personal days will be used for the first three unexcused absences.  These days will still count towards the 10 days of unexcused absences per quarter.

RE-ADMITTANCE

When a student has been absent, they must bring a note stating the reason for the absence and signed and dated by the parent.  Any student who has been absent due to an illness must have been free of any fever for 24 hours.  This note must be taken to the attendance desk where they will be issued a re-admittance slip before returning to the classroom.

TARDY POLICY

Any student arriving after 8:45 a.m. must pick up a tardy slip from the school attendance desk before going to the classroom.  The student should provide the office with a note signed by a parent or guardian explaining why the student was late.  Whether or not a tardy is considered excused or unexcused is determined by the same criteria as absences.

The consequences in any quarter for unexcused tardies are:

First tardy –  Fifth Tardy

            Teacher Warning

            Consequences determined by the teacher

Sixth Tardy

Citizenship = N for the quarter

            Detention after school

            Referral sent home to parent

Seventh Tardy

            Referral to administration

            Parent letter mailed home

Eighth Tardy

            Parent conference

Ninth Tardy

            Suspension (1 day)

Tenth and beyond

            Administration’s discretion

HOMEWORK REQUESTS

Any requests for daily homework must be given to the office before 11:00 a.m. and the teacher will be notified.  A homework packet will be left in the school office by 2:45 p.m. on the day of the request.  Daily work may not be available prior to the absence and it is the student’s responsibility to obtain the assignments and material that they missed.

STUDENTS LEAVING DURING THE DAY

Parents may not disturb a classroom during school time.  Parents wishing to remove a student from a class or the School must sign out the student at the office and notify the student’s teacher.  Parents are to make appointments to see teachers during non-class time.
